What do we mean by make and model?

First, let’s get our terms straight. The ‘make’ of a car is the name of the manufacturer, such as BMW or Toyota. ‘Model’ refers to the type of car – for instance, Toyota makes a number of different models, including the Camry and Yaris. Search for your car’s make below to get an indication of how much it might cost to insure with Youi.

How car makes and models affect insurance costs.

Your car insurance premium is calculated based on, among other factors, how expensive your car would be to repair if it’s damaged or how much it would cost to replace if it was a total loss. This is why luxury cars are typically more expensive to insure than cheaper ones. So it makes sense then that we calculate car insurance by make and model – to make sure you’re paying an amount that is appropriate for the car you drive.

The car’s value

As a general rule, the more valuable the car, the more expensive it is to insure. So typically, if you pay more upfront for the vehicle, there’s a good chance you might pay more to keep it covered.

Mods and accessories

With some of our policies, you can choose to insure some modifications and after-market accessories you’ve added to the car. These will most likely increase the cost of your premium too.1

Chance of theft

Sadly, certain types of cars are more likely to be stolen than others. In 2021, the 3 most stolen cars in Australia were the Holden Commodore VE, Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger PX.2 So the likelihood of a car being targeted by thieves is another factor that’s considered when calculating car insurance by model.

Safety rating

Cars with a higher ANCAP (that’s the Australasian New Car Assessment Program) safety rating tend to be looked upon more favourably when it comes to car insurance costs. So a safer car could help you save and be a wise insurance purchase.
