Comprehensive car insurance

If you’re looking for the highest level of cover for your EV, our Comprehensive insurance might be for you. It covers accidents, most severe weather events, fires, theft and damage to property belonging to others.

Comprehensive

If your brand-new electric car is a total loss within 2 years of initial registration, we’ll replace it or pay you the replacement cost.⁵
Cover against damage to your EV caused by a storm, hail or flood.⁶
Cover for $150 per item up to $750 per claim for items inside your car that are lost or damaged due to an insured event.⁷

Third Party Fire & Theft

Our Third Party Fire & Theft insurance covers your electric vehicle if it is stolen, damaged by fire or causes damage to someone else’s car or property.

Third Party Fire & Theft

Cover for towing and storage costs at the nearest suitable place for safekeeping if your car is damaged or can’t be driven after an insured event.⁷
Reimbursement of up to $1,000 in combined costs for emergency transport, repairs and accommodation if you can no longer safely drive your EV after an insured event and you’re more than 100km from home.⁸
Cover for up to $20 million in legal liability if your car accidentally causes damage to another person’s property and we approve your claim.⁹

Third Party Property Only

If your EV causes damage to someone else’s car or property, and we approve your claim, our Third Party Property Only policy will provide you with the following cover:

Car insurance prices can vary depending on factors such as driver age, how the car is used, and vehicle age, make, model and features. While this isn’t unique to EVs, electric cars tend to have a lot of built-in tech and ADAS safety features. Systems such as rain sensors, cameras, collision avoidance and driver monitoring are great for safety but can be pricey to repair or recalibrate. EV batteries can also impact the cost of insurance because if a battery is damaged in an accident, it can be expensive to replace.

Our roadside assistance comes standard with our Comprehensive car insurance policies. It’s there to help you out when you’re stuck – no matter your car’s fuel type. If your EV battery runs out of charge, we’ll provide a tow to the nearest charging station – 24/7.¹

Youi’s hire car providers can provide you with a hire car for up to 14 days, depending on the policy you hold and the nature of the insured event.

Your EV battery is part of your car, so it’s covered by Youi’s Comprehensive car insurance if damaged during an insured event. Charging cables do not form part of the vehicle and are not automatically covered.

How much might it cost to insure your EV?

Not every EV is the same, and EV insurance premiums vary too. Car insurance for a Tesla, for example, may not cost the same as cover for a BYD or a Kia. For indicative annual premium costs, choose your EV’s make below.

Need a little more cover?

Depending on how you use your EV, you might be on the lookout for a little extra cover. We understand, and that’s why, in addition to our Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft car insurance policies, we offer a range of optional covers which may suit EV owners. Not every option is available in every circumstance, so just ask, and we’ll do our best to assist.

Hire car for other insured events

Being without your car while it’s being repaired can be a hassle. Add this extra to your Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft policy to get a hire car for up to 14 days for a range of insured events.¹¹

Your choice of EV repairer

While we have an extensive network of repairers, you can also choose your own if you purchase this optional cover. Just let us know if you want to choose your own repairer if you ever need to make a claim.¹²

Damaged or lost business items

Add this to your Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft policy and get covered for up to $400 per item and $2,000 per claim if your business items are lost or damaged while they are stored in your locked car or unbraked trailer as a result of an insured event.¹³

Contents upgrade for your EV campervan/motorhome

Choose this optional extra with your Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft policy to cover the contents inside your electric motorhome or campervan. We’ll cover up to $1,000 per item lost or damaged in an insured event.¹⁴

Reduced windscreens excess

This option reduces your excess for claims relating solely to windscreen, window glass or sunroof glass.¹⁵

Accidents happen. So don’t stress when they do, and know your EV is covered for accidental damage caused by you or someone else.¹⁶

Not all damage is accidental. If someone intentionally damages your EV, that’s covered as well.¹⁷

We’ll provide cover for accidental damage to your EV caused by a storm or flood.¹⁸

If your EV is damaged by fire, we'll cover the cost to replace or repair it.¹⁸

If someone steals your EV or causes damage to the vehicle in a theft attempt, we'll cover the cost to replace or repair it.¹⁹

As rare as they are in Australia, earthquakes can still hit and cause major carnage. We’ll cover your EV if it’s damaged by earthquake.²⁰

If your EV accidentally causes damage to another person’s property, the driver’s legal liability arising from the accident is covered for up to $20 million.⁹

We’ll cover the reasonable cost of towing and storing your EV in a suitable place nearest to the incident location after an insured event.²¹

If your EV is not safe to drive after an insured event, we’ll reimburse up to $100 for personal transport from the scene of the incident, to and from the car’s repairer or to and from a hire car provider.²²

If your EV is in an insured event and isn’t safe to drive and you’re more than 100km from home, we’ll reimburse up to $1,000 for emergency accommodation, transport or repairs.²³

We’ll pay the reasonable cost of a hire car for up to 14 days after theft or attempted theft.²⁴

If you’re the not-at-fault driver in an accident that causes loss or damage to your vehicle, we’ll arrange and cover the costs of a suitable hire car to help you get around.²⁵

If you have a Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft policy, you can add optional cover to get a hire car for up to 14 days for all other insured events.²⁶

Note: this optional cover may not always be available to you. If you ask and we agree to add the option, the details will be noted on your policy schedule, and you will be charged an additional premium.

If the keys to your EV are stolen, we will cover up to $1,000 (after excess) of the cost to replace or recode your car’s locks and keys.²⁷

We’ll replace the following items that are on or in your EV should they be damaged as a result of an insured event:

Baby seat/s
Personalised registration plates
Towbar
Window tinting.²⁸

Your car isn’t the only thing we’ve got covered in an insured event. We look after what’s inside your EV too, with contents covered for up to $150 per item and up to $750 in total.⁷

Your unbraked trailer will be covered for certain insured events for its market value up to $1,500 if it’s damaged as a result of an insured event, if:

It is being towed by the car;
It is parked at the overnight address noted on the policy schedule; or
You, a listed driver or anyone acting with your permission are using it at another location and it is unattended for less than 24 hours.³⁰

For the specific insured events which apply to this cover refer to the PDS.

After you’ve sold or traded in your current EV and replaced it with another car, we will insure your replacement car for up to 14 days after purchase for the same level of cover as the car that it replaced. Where you have Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft cover, the most we will pay for a claim on the replacement car is its market value up to a maximum of $100,000.³¹

We’ll help look after your mental health too, with up to $1,500 per person towards the cost of counselling sessions required after an incident where a claim has been accepted. This applies to you, as well as any other listed drivers and household members.⁹

If a driver of your car sustains a fatal injury as a result of an accident while driving your EV with your permission, we will pay $5,000 per contract period to the deceased driver’s estate for the purpose of meeting expenses incidental to a funeral, burial or cremation.³²

Whether it’s a flat tyre, a dead EV battery or a car that just won’t go, our roadside assistance will be there to help you and your loved ones out of trouble 24/7. For EVs that are out of charge, we will tow your vehicle to the nearest charging station. Some limits and restrictions apply – see details in the PDS.¹

If your business items are damaged or stolen whilst they are stored in your car or unbraked trailer as a result of an insured event that causes damage to your car or unbraked trailer, we’ve got you covered. With our optional cover for business items, we’ll pay the costs of replacing each item up to $400, with a maximum amount of $2,000 per claim.³³

Note: this optional cover may not always be available to you. If you ask and we agree to add the option, the details will be noted on your policy schedule, and you will be charged an additional premium.

If your EV is a campervan or motorhome, we’ll cover the contents inside up to $1,000 for loss or damage due to an insured event. The maximum amount we will pay for each claim is noted on your policy schedule.³⁴

Note: this optional cover may not always be available to you. If you ask and we agree to add the option, the details will be noted on your policy schedule, and you will be charged an additional premium.

This optional cover allows you to choose a repairer outside of our extensive repairer network. However, if you don’t select this option, we’ll manage the repair process from start to finish using one of our trusted repairers nationwide. All repairs we authorise come with a lifetime guarantee on workmanship for as long as you own the EV.²
