Youi Contents insurance FAQs

Got questions about covering your belongings? You might find the answers here. For general home insurance FAQs, see our home insurance page.

Building insurance is about covering just that – the main building and other structures at the premises of your home or your investment. It’s there to help cover the cost of repairing or replacing the structure of the building if it’s impacted by events such as theft, fire, earthquake, flood or storm. It also protects permanent fixtures and fittings, such as the roof, ceilings, garage, driveway, fence, in-ground swimming pool, floors, windows, doors, fitted kitchens and cupboards.

Contents insurance is designed to cover personal items inside your home, such as appliances, clothing, sporting equipment, artwork and jewellery. Contents also include fitted carpets, curtains and blinds, bicycles, food and medicine.

As a tenant, your landlord’s insurance probably covers the building itself and perhaps any furnishings that they provide. However, it’s your responsibility to protect your personal possessions. That includes furniture and appliances that you own, as well as clothes, bicycles, laptops and high-value items such as artwork and jewellery.

High-value items like artwork are automatically covered up to $15,000 per item. If the item is worth more, you can list it with its specific replacement value.

Jewellery isn’t automatically included in your contents cover. If any individual jewellery item, pair or set is worth more than $15,000, you’ll need to list its replacement value. For other jewellery valued at $15,000 or under, you can set a lump sum value for the total replacement value. You may also want to look into Accidental Loss or Damage as an optional cover to protect your jewellery when it’s worn or taken away from your home.13

The cost of contents insurance can vary, depending on factors such as where you live, your home security, your coverage amount and your claims history. Choosing a higher basic excess can reduce your insurance premium, but you’ll end up paying more out of pocket if you need to make a claim.

Yes. You can cancel your Youi Contents insurance at any time. And if it is after the cooling off period, you’ll only need to pay up to the date of cancellation. A small cancellation fee may apply.

Usually, when you make a claim and it’s accepted, you’re required to pay an excess. The cost of this excess and how it compares to the amount you’re claiming might impact your decision to make a claim.

If your guests also suffer loss or damage to their possessions from an insured event at your home where we also accept a claim, we’ll pay up to $1,000. Because that’s what friends are for.

You may be asked to provide proof of the value and ownership of the items you’re claiming for. We recommend keeping receipts and getting written valuations for precious pieces, such as artwork or jewellery, but we’ll consider the circumstances if your proof of ownership is destroyed in the insured event.
